April 27th, 2018

Happy Friday, Sharks!

Man, what a week. Finally getting a chance to sit down and write, but it is already 5:00. As I type this, a lot of wonderful volunteers are already hard at work down in the cafeteria setting up for tomorrow’s 8th grade dance. Just a reminder for our 8th grade families, the dinner/dance starts at 5:30 PM and ends at 8. A few parents have asked about what students should wear. There is no formal dress code. Generally, most folks show up in nicer clothes, but you will still see a few pairs of blue jeans paired with a nice shirt. This week, all of our students ran the 5K race, which was terrific to see. Many folks helped with the race and a huge shout out to the PE Department for an outstanding event. Moreover, the kids did a fantastic job training for this event and then pushing through the heat, the mud, and the exhaustion. Great job!

Next week gets a bit busy with events, so make sure you take a look at the weekly calendar and the news blurbs. Again, longer news items this week, so I’ll stop here. Have a great weekend, and for those attending the 8th grade dance, I will see you there.

The Sutherland PTO is hosting a viewing of the movie, SCREENAGERS, on Thursday May 3rd from 6:30 – 8:30 PM in the SMS Gathering Area. All are invited to attend. Here is a brief write up from the film’s website:

“Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well. In SCREENAGERS, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.”

6.      PTO Dining Out – Monday: Timberwood is hosting the SMS Dining out night on Monday, 30 April. Take a break from cooking and support SMS!

Friday, April 20th

Happy Friday, Sharks!
What a week! Lots of news items below…a record breaking 8 items, so this part will be short and sweet. We have a busy week next week with the 5K race. The PE Department has worked very hard to make this a great event and the students have worked hard preparing for the run. The race takes place all day during exploratory blocks, so students will most likely want to bring a change of clothes for after the race. Rain date is Thursday. We also have the 8th grade dance coming on Saturday of next week. We hope you all have a terrific weekend and enjoy the time together.

Friday, April 13th

Happy Friday, Sharks!
It was great to get all the students back from their assorted vacations. Despite some weird snow this week, the weather warmed up and actually allowed our students the chance to take advantage of the great outdoors. We have a few classes outside working as I type this. A great week all around here at SMS. Students have started training for the SMS 5K race coming up at the end of the month. While not running, students are also getting to take advantage of the indoor archery range that the PE Department has set up in the gym. We had our Choral assessment over at Burley on Wednesday, plus an AVID trip that same day. Thursday, our drama students go to venture off campus on a field trip. Lots of excitement today as the 5th graders took their annual tour to set the stage for the next three years. We also have our last whole-school dance of the year this afternoon, so we expect a big crowd. As always, please make sure they have transportation at 6:00 PM.
Not a whole lot on next week’s calendar as we start to get ready for SOLs in May. To help, here are those dates:
